Authorized Physicians Have Access to Complete Patient Data at the Point of Care
San Jose, CA, March 24, 2009 – Physicians Medical Group of Santa Cruz County, the lead organization of the Santa Cruz Health Information Exchange (HIE), has implemented the Elysium® Virtual Health Record from Axolotl Corp., the nation’s premier provider of HIE solutions and services. Building on more than a dozen years of successful information delivery and interchange using Axolotl’s Elysium Exchange, authorized physicians are now able to query community wide data for a more complete clinical picture, improving the quality and timeliness of patient care.

“We are excited to have taken our Elysium implementation to the next level,” said Bill Beighe, Chief Information Officer of Physicians Medical Group, a three hundred physician member IPA at the heart of the longest running, self-sustaining HIE in the country. “We have been using Axolotl’s solutions to exchange clinical information between disparate systems for the last thirteen years. With a single click, extended patient information is accessible and displayed like a patient chart.”
“Axolotl has been our HIE partner, continually evolving our solutions to meet our current health care needs,” said Marvin Labrie, Chief Executive Officer, Physicians Medical Group. “Our clinicians, at the point of care, can view patient labs, medications, allergies, radiology reports and more – assisting them in making quality decisions in a timely manner.”
“Our emergency department physicians will no longer have to play a guessing game or waste valuable time and resources by ordering duplicate lab and imaging tests, or calling primary care physicians,” said Nancy Greenstreet, MD, Medical Director, Physicians Medical Group. “From any secure browser they can quickly find a patient’s medical history, medications, specialty care, recent tests and procedures, and treat accordingly – in the ED this can mean the difference between life and death.”
Axolotl’s Elysium Virtual Health Record (VHR) provides a comprehensive view of the patient, allowing authorized physicians to electronically locate, connect to, and review a holistic patient chart that is drawn from data in multiple health care systems. All available patient data is assembled using a record locator service to create a complete electronic health record without commingling data from disparate sources. Authorized VHR users may also select specific data from a patient’s health record and download it to their EMR or EMR Lite application.
“Santa Cruz has been a role model for HIE in the United States,” said Ray Scott, Axolotl CEO. “The IPA spearheaded the initiative, bringing on board competing hospitals, labs, radiology centers and pharmacies to create an interoperable health care environment. The community has grown to include more than 95 % of the region’s population and more than 700 regular on-line healthcare professionals -Santa Cruz is healthcare connected.”
